ternative, however, requires a clear analysis of the origins of the crisis and a consistent set of principles for its resolution. Our aim here is to question two elements of traditional Marxist theory that we believe impede the development of such an analysis. One is the notion that the logic of accumulation is set by the character of capitalist social relations alone, the role of the state being simply a response to the pattern of growth and to the crisis generated by the capitalist mode of production. The other element is the idea that the state is a &dquo;factor of cohesion&dquo; in the social formation, its primary function being to reproduce the social relations of production.2 2
